For Busted Up Loggers

This weekend is the Deming Log Show, a Whatcom County staple that's been around for generations. It's a show featuring competitions and educational exhibitions centered around the logging industry. You get to watch people climb poles at break-neck (or knee!) speeds, chopping and sawing logs, log rolling, axe-throwing, and a huge tug-o-war match.

There's multiple food options available including burgers, taco salad, and a salmon, beef or chicken dinner with baked potato and more. There's also vendors with treats and other promotions outside the ring for people to visit. All of the proceeds go to benefit the Deming Log Show charity, which benefits "busted-up loggers", or people who have been injured working in the logging industry.

The Log Show is fun for the whole family. I have wonderful childhood memories filled with the smells of sawdust and chain oil. Bring the whole fam and support Whatcom’s logging community. All the details.

In other news…

In late July, when you children’s brains are nearing stasis from all the iPad-time, kick them into gear and send them off to Squalicum Storm Cross Country Camp. It’s co-ed, ages 11-18yrs, and runs Monday-Thursday (July 21-24).

Camp highlights include guest speakers on topics related to running and running lifestyle, games, ultimate frisbee, team games, relays, weight training, daily runs and a great opportunity to make new friends before school starts. Sign up those whippersnappers.

🥚 The Whatcom County Public Health Department posted an egg recall due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled eggs are “brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs” from August Egg Company, with sell-by dates from “March 4, 2025 to June 19, 2025”. It sounds like they were primarily sold through Walmart in Washington state. Read the Public Health News post for all the details. 👆️

Crash an Open House

1160 St Paul Street (Open Sat 2-3:30 pm)
This is a fun one. It’s cottagey from the front, but hiding a surprisingly large home behind. Cute yard, nice interior spaces with opportunities to freshen up the finishes, and it seems to have a partial suite in the basement. Listing.

2526 Moore Street (Open Sun 12-2 pm)
When this house was built in 1918 it was probably surrounded by farmland. I-5 was not even a glimmer in the mind of some DC bureaucrat. If you picture wide open fields on all sides it looks right at home even though you know it’s in the heart of Bellingham. I think it’s charming. Listing.

A night of circus, spectacle, and shenanigans! Vaudevillingham is a monthly community open stage that’s uncurated, uncensored, unapologetic, and UNBELIEVABLE! The best part is that you never know what might happen... Axe juggling? Aerial silks on roller skates? A mad-lib singalong? A symphony made purely from conch shell noises? Grab tickets for the Sunday show.

Sprawl on a blanket, the Bellingham Bay stretching out in front of you, and a DJ is dropping beats that make you want to move. That's exactly what you'll get at this open-air DJ sessions at Boulevard Park. 6-9 pm on Sunday.

Naturalists will be roaming the beach to help people explore the tidepools and learn about what they find. There will also be 4 tours: 1 about plants and birds along the 3/4-mile trail to the beach, 2 about the geology and geologic history of the park, and another about how the ocean waves and currents work with the bluffs to maintain the beach. The Marine Life Center will be on the beach, and a number of community organizations will have informational tents at the trailhead. Explore low tide.

FRIDAY

Tool Fair, Hardware Sales - The Tool Fair is the biggest power tool sale of the year, bringing together 20+ top vendors, massive savings, live demos, and unbeatable giveaways! Open all weekend.

SATURDAY
