A Season for Sharing

As Thanksgiving approaches, several local nonprofits and community groups have reached out asking for community support. If you’re looking to lend a hand, make a donation, or simply spread a little gratitude, here are some of the organizations making a difference in Whatcom County this Thanksgiving.

Friends of the Family Resource Center (FFRC)
An all-volunteer group formed at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, in response to the unmet basic needs of students and families in Bellingham Public Schools. Inspired by a 2017 Bellingham Public Schools PACS (Parent Advisory Committee to the Superintendent) presentation by Isabel Meaker (Executive Director, Family Engagement). Meaker spoke about the great needs and challenges experienced by a number of students and families in schools across the district. Fill the Shelves Fundraiser

Food Drive to Benefit the Ferndale Food Bank
Wildflower Funeral Concepts is holding a food drive with a goal of collecting 500 pounds of non-perishable food during the month of November for the Ferndale Food Bank. Community support is still welcome. Residents are encouraged to drop off canned and packaged food items through November 30 to help local families facing food insecurity during the holiday season. Maple Alley Inn
Since 1987, Maple Alley Inn has been dedicated to serving healthy and sustaining meals and fighting hunger in Whatcom County. The Opportunity Council program serves hot, nutritious lunches for free on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 - 1:00 at Faith Lutheran Church on McCleod, with three special holiday meals this month and next including a Harvest Feast on Thanksgiving. Anyone regardless of income is welcome to stop by for lunch! Kids are welcome. Support the Maple Alley Inn mission.

I love seeing public art installations prioritized around the county, especially in and around smaller communities. Ferndale seems to be leading the charge, 🎨 which is lovely.

The Ferndale Arts Commission’s latest project is a mural by local artist (and tattoo artist) Todd Bruce, that adorns the alley at 5687 Third Ave. The folk art inspired design is small but mighty. A great addition to the community. 😁 Check it out when you drive by.

Events & Nightlife

Spinning Into The Night

Main Street Bar & Grill turns up the volume on Thanksgiving Eve with The Shannanagins tonight, November 26, at 8:30 p.m. This Ferndale favorite brings their high-energy rock and roll set to kick off the holiday weekend, joined by special guest Brad Bauthues on bass.

Stones Throw Brewery hosts Casaundra May and James tonight, November 26, from 6 to 8 pm, bringing an authentic blend of Delta blues and soulful storytelling to Fairhaven. Drawing inspiration from Mississippi’s blues roots and the grit of Chicago’s West Side, May’s powerful vocals and James’s slide guitar create a sound that’s raw, warm, and steeped in tradition.

WEDNESDAY

Thanks-A-Roke, Wild Buffalo – Belt out your favorite tunes at the annual Thanks-A-Roke karaoke night, featuring Lotionberry. Doors open at 8 pm, singing starts at 8:30 pm, with no cover and plenty of festive cocktails.
