🐹 Slug Love 🐌🐌

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Monday update from The Hamster Wheel.
So many wonderful kites flying over Zuanich Point Park this weekend. Whether it’s seeing them from the neighborhood, or walking beneath them while on the harbor loop, they never fail to make me smile. Thank you to all the kite flyers! 🪁 🪁
Have fun, and stay safe out there!

Wrapping Utility Boxes With Community Art
The Bellingham Arts Commission meets tomorrow, August 5th, and will be reviewing and hopefully approving a project I just love. You know those utility boxes that pepper the city? Typically gray, often defaced with graffiti. Well the city has selected a handful of high visibility locations 👇️, and partnered with 5th grade students to produce fun and artistic wraps to liven these boxes up.

The students, who partisipated in the 2024-2025 Water School program were asked to submit original artwork. “The theme for all submissions was "Water," and students were encouraged to express what they learned and experienced during their time at Water School.” Here are few that jumped out at me. 👇️

This is a wonderful way to integrate public art into our community in spaces that are often otherwise an eyesore. Love it! 😁 See all the artwork being reviewed on the meeting agenda packet.
In other news…
🎨 The City of Bellingham is building a roster of talented creators for future public art projects, offering a chance to showcase your work with budgets from $50,000 to $195,000. Opportunities include designing, fabricating, and installing art—apply by noon on September 12!
🚁 I enjoy following the updates from Station SAR Whidbey social feeds. They regularly post amazing photos from search and rescue missions in the northern Cascades. This week, Kelly Salander, celebrated her time on the team by posting this beautiful video. 👇️ Worth a look. 🙂
She writes “if you ever get the chance to be part of a SAR unit - take it. It’ll challenge you, change you, and give you experiences you’ll carry forever. 🚁✨”
