🐹 Markets and Murals 🎨🎨

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Friday update from The Hamster Wheel.

It’s going to be a wet weekend. Possibly VERY wet (some predictions say 1.5 inches, others say 2), so bring your bumbershoot when you’re out on adventures. ☔️

Have fun, and stay safe out there!

Art And Community By The Bay

The Noisy Waters Mural Festival is back at Bellingham's Waterfront for a third year of friendly competition in which artists will have three days to paint murals on 8’x’8’ portable walls for the community to enjoy. As an attendee, you get to vote for your favorite mural, and the top three winners will receive cash contracts to paint large murals in Bellingham next year.

This free, family-friendly celebration, produced by local nonprofit Paper Whale, offers more than just murals. Look for live music, a makers market, upcycled fashion shows, DIY spray camps, yoga, bike-powered art tours, kids’ walls, and interactive workshops. All in service of activating underused public spaces with creativity.

It’s going to be drizzly this weekend so pack your light rain gear in your day bag and find your way down to the waterfront. Here’s the full schedule for the festivities.

In other news…

🖼️ It’s another market filled weekend in Whatcom County with at least five options to choose from. Or, heck, hit them all!! 😉

  • Waterfront Arts Market at Waypoint Park - An opportunity to shop for art, jewelry, pet supplies, textiles, candles, food, and sustainable products. This market is running alongside the Noisy Waters Mural Festival so prepare for congested parking. Sat 2-8 pm.

  • Blaine’s Market by the Sea - An open-air market sitting on G Street Plaza in Downtown Blaine, featuring an eclectic mix of local produce, handmade crafts, jazzy accessories, handcrafted jewelry, wood crafts and baked goods. Sat 10 am to 2 pm.

  • Creative Corner Artisan Market - A creative corner artisan market featuring local Whatcom County artists every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at 201 E Chestnut Ave Bellingham, WA. This event is free and supports local small businesses and artisans. Sat 10 am to 2 pm.

  • Local Crafter's Market at Bellis Fair Mall - Hosted by The Cusp Creative, this handmade market will feature up to 30 local vendors offering unique, handcrafted goods. 11 am to 3 pm.

  • Bellingham Farmers Market - More than just a place to buy fresh produce and hand crafted products. Find a sense of community and gather with friends and family. Sat 10 am to 2 pm.

🍺 All good things must come to an end, but not quite yet for Boundary Bay’s delicious Scotch Ale and a few other favorites. The brewery announced this week, that while the brewery and bistro on Railroad Ave will be closing at the end of September, the beer will live on through a partnership with Black Raven Brewery.

“After carefully exploring all the options we are excited to announce we have chosen to contract brew with Black Raven Brewing and sell a few of our most popular beers in stores, restaurants, and pubs! What that means for our customers is that you will continue to see and be able to purchase Scotch Ale, Cedar Dust IPA, NW Original IPA and select seasonals.”

🦪 Whatcom County Health and Community Services (WCHCS) has announced the second recreational shellfish harvest closure due to elevated biotoxins on the north Whatcom County coastline. This effects all species of molluscan shellfish from Sandy Point north to the Canadian border, including all of Drayton Harbor and Point Roberts.

WCHCS warns that “paralytic shellfish poisoning and other naturally occurring biotoxins are not destroyed by cooking or freezing. Crab meat is not affected, but “crab butter” and crab entrails can harbor biotoxins and should always be discarded.”

Crash an Open House

9175 Cornell Creek Road, Glacier (Open Sat 12-2 pm)
Loving this little home in Glacier. The style falls somewhere between mountain cabin, and chalet, with a sweet nestled-in-the-woods vibe. Sounds like it’s currently being used as a short term rental, so no conversion necessary if you’re looking for a income property.

5575 Coquitlam Drive, Blaine (Open Sun 12-2 pm)
Check out this waterside home in Birch Bay Village. You get all the normal amenities associated with the gated community alongside your own 50ft cement dock! Add to that almost 4000 square feet of living area and you’ve got a heck of a home here. 😉 Listing.
