Wildland Fire Risk High This Summer
With the arrival of Independence Day, I thought it would be worth reviewing this years wildfire risk predictions from the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center, which provides support and intelligence about wildfire activity to federal and state wildland fire suppression agencies. The outlook for 2025, unfortunately, is for a pretty tough wildfire season throughout the PNW. Below are risk maps for July and August. 👇️

From the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook report: “all areas of the Northwest Geographic Area (NWCC) are expected to experience above average significant wildfire potential for July. Significant fire potential is expected to remain above average areawide through September before starting to decline in October.“

If you lived in Bellingham in 2020 you will remember our weeks long smoky haze brought on by wildfires in Canada and Eastern Washington 👆️. As if COVID wasn’t bad enough. 😆 Fingers crossed we don’t have another summer like that. But overall, be careful with fireworks tonight!
In other news…
🧰 Our friends over at the Re Store have announce a free skillshare workshop, happening July 19th from 1 to 3 pm, called Holy Sheet-Rock! Drywall Repair Basics.

These are great skills to acquire. You’ll be amazed how many small repairs you can DIY and have look amazing! More details and RSVP here.
⛏️ Volunteer Opportunities This Weekend: There are a few outdoor work parties this weekend.

Locust Beach: Fourth of July celebrations can leave a lot of trash behind. Join Re Sources on Saturday from 9 to 11 am for a beach cleanup with refreshments provided (including fresh Bagelry bagels), on Bellingham’s waterfront to prevent trash from getting into Bellingham Bay! Details & Registration.
Birch Bay Berm: Lend a hand to keep Birch Bay beautiful by participating in a beach cleanup on Saturday, July 5th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Whatcom Conservation District, BBWARM, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, Whatcom County Health and Community Services, and the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to facilitate a beach cleanup at the Birch Bay Berm (7851 Birch Bay Drive). Working together, we can help protect wild animals, sea creatures, pets, birds, and humans from the harmful effects of fireworks trash.

You can’t get more PNW than this. A cedar log constructed home. Nestled in the woods. Just up the highway in Glacier. 2 bed, 2+ bath, love it! Listing.

251 N Garden Street (Open Sat, Sun 12-2 pm)
I love the alpine gable on this South Hill beauty. It’s darling where it is, but could just as easily fit into a gnome village nestled into some fairytale woodland. Plus this one comes with a fully-detached ADU. Nice! Listing.
