Lighting Causes Fires in East Whatcom County
Whatcom County’s 2025 fire season has been relatively calm so far, with minimal smoke and few local wildfires. On Wednesday, lightning strikes near Ross Lake broke this quiet period, sparking two small fires, each burning less than two acres of timber, and one larger fire that has expanded to 250 acres.

The Northwest Interagency Coordination Center published a status update on Saturday that “steep, difficult, and cliffy terrain pose significant threat to firefighter safety which limits direct line on the Perry Fire. Fire managers continue a full suppression strategy with aerial delivered water from a Type-3 helicopter. Additional resources, including a Type-1 Wildland Fire Module, have been ordered to support active suppression operations.”

📸 North Cascades National Park Service
Extensive fire restrictions remain in effect across all areas of the North Cascades Park. Campfires are banned throughout, and drones are prohibited in the areas impacted by the fire response. Learn more at the National Park Service fire closure page.

🏙️ The Bellingham Design Review Board meets tomorrow, September 2nd in the City Council Chambers at 3 pm, to review and provide early design guidance on two interesting projects in downtown Bellingham.

The first is a planned 65-unit affordable housing structure at 202 Unity Street. This location is the underdeveloped lot across the street and up the hill from Arlis’s Diner, where a single story cream colored building currently stands adjacent to a “paid public parking” lot. Neighborhood meeting notes indicate interest in community spaces, like a coffee shop, being integrated into the design.

The second is an enormous 135-residential-unit, six-story, mixed-use structure at 1315 D St. & 800 W. Holly, that would fill the block surrounding the historic Territorial Courthouse and the newly installed courthouse plaza where a historic trolley car is displayed.
