🐹 Film and a Brew 📽️📽️

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Wednesday update from The Hamster Wheel.

It’s been months since I’ve been able to say this… but we’re having a quiet mid-week. 🤯 The city of subdued excitement slips into it’s winter slumber. 😉 …a few weeks early.

Have fun, and stay safe out there!

Get off the Hamster Wheel

A Film and a Brew 📽️📽️

This Thursday, grab a delicious pint of Aslan Depot beer, hear from Whatcom Land Trust’s Executive Director Rachel Vasak, and catch the first public screening of Resilient Future, a “short film highlighting the work of environmental, tribal, and local government leaders as they prepare for a resilient future in Whatcom County.”

This event is part of Aslan Depot’s Pint Night series which provide an opportunity to learn about and support organizations operating in the Ham and the surrounding county.

The event starts at 6 pm, and runs until 8pm. It’s free (the best price), open to everyone age 21 and older, and $1.00 of every Aslan beer & hop water poured goes to Whatcom Land Trust. Learn from Rachel, have a blast, drink a pint, and support an amazing local organization that works to preserve and protect wildlife habitat, scenic, agricultural and open space lands in Whatcom County for future generations.

In other news…

🐟️ This week, Bellingham Technical College announced a new endowment supporting students in the Fisheries & Aquaculture Sciences program. Called the William and Bonita Waters Fishing Scholarship, it will provide more than $38,000 each year in scholarships as well as $10,000 annually for the BTC Foundation’s Greatest Need Student Support Fund.

"We cannot thank the Waters family enough for their generosity and support for our students," Fisheries & Aquaculture Sciences Instructor Brittany Palm is quoted in the announcement. “Our program requires a high level of dedication for working with live animals in and around aquatic environments. These scholarships will provide much needed financial support, allowing students to focus on their training and prepare for their careers."

👯 Registration is now open for Bellingham Parks and Recreation’s fall activities programs which run the gambit from badminton leagues to family-focused Christmas ornament making.

Events & Nightlife

Spinning Into The Night

Feature an Event. Reach out.

Inside Berlin’s sultry Kit Kat Klub, a charismatic Master of Ceremonies invites patrons to partake in a decadent world of musical numbers, kicklines and torrid affairs — a welcome reprieve from the ever-growing Nazi influence just outside its doors. As the political unrest nears a tipping point, the beautiful life the cabaret promises slowly begins to fade, putting love, friendship and loyalties to the test. Cabaret plays at the New Prospect Theatre on Thursday, and Sunday.

Presented by Rising Waters Collective, soprano Ibidunni Ojikutu, pianist Jay Rozendaal, and director Julia Benzinger present a bold, contemporary English adaptation of La voix humaine, the searing one-woman chamber opera by Francis Poulenc and French surrealist Jean Cocteau. Tonight, August 27th, starting at 7:00 pm at the Lairmont Manor. Details and tickets.

Join Washington Sea Grant and Washington State University Extension to learn how to identify common crabs of Washington, and how to monitor invasive European Green crab spread & Dungeness crab growth. The free virtual training is today, August 27th, (register here), and beach practice is tomorrow at Marine Park.

WEDNESDAY

Sip & Paint Paint Party, Lagom Vineyards - a delightful evening of creativity and relaxation at Lagom Vineyards, where you can sip delicious wines while painting your own masterpiece on an 11x14 canvas with expert guidance—no experience needed! Tickets to paint.

Reggae Nights with DJ Yogoman, Boundary Bay - Expect a dynamite record selection, soulful vocalizations, and a whole lot of full joy as DJ Yogoman uplifts the Boundary crowd one last time before they close their doors. Come early, bring your friends, and soak up the good vibes in the beer garden! Beats drop at 8 pm.

THURSDAY

Rosé Flight Night, Overflow Taps (Barkley Village) - Rosé lovers, this one’s for you! Sip and savor a flight of three refreshing rosés, perfect for summer vibes. If charcuterie is your thing, pre-order a box from Graze and Gather, and they’ll have it ready to enjoy alongside your flight:

Forty Drop Few and Corazones de Cedro, Boundary Bay Brewery - Stone & Sue’s Forty Drop Few are a trio that play pre-war stringband, hillbilly, county blues and jazz as well as originals. Corazones de Cedro brings the centuries-old musical tradition of son jarocho from the Gulf Coast of Mexico to Bellingham, WA with joy, love, and respect. Old timey tunes start at 8 pm in the beer garden.
