🐹 Fearful in Fairhaven 👻👻

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Friday update from The Hamster Wheel.

Has anyone spotted either of the comets currently overhead in the night sky? I was hoping to see them earlier this week when we had a clear night but wasn’t able to. Would love to see photos if anyone’s been creative with the long exposure! 📸

Have fun, and stay safe out there!

📚️ Fellow Bookworm Alert: This weekend the Friends of Lynden Library are holding a Library Book Sale that kicks off at 9 am today, October 24, and runs through Sunday. It looks like Sunday’s opening isn’t until 1 pm, otherwise 9 am to 4:30 each day.

☔️ We have classic PNW fall weather on the way! The National Weather Service is predicting between a “half and three quarters of an inch of rain” today, October 24, and between “a quarter and half of an inch possible” overnight.

The blustery weather we experienced last night may continue as well. They are predicting daytime “gusts as high as 36 mph.”

⛏️ Volunteer Opportunities This Weekend:

  • Riparian Habitat Tour of Terrell Creek: Enjoy nature in a new way this month on a guided tour of Terrell Creek, which flows into Birch Bay, with staff from NSEA, Birch Bay Watershed and Aquatic Resources Management (BBWARM) District, BP, and the WA Department of Fish & Wildlife. While visiting a variety of streamside restoration projects around BP Cherry Point, you’ll see young and old forests, discuss land management, and learn about the benefits of trees for habitat, wildlife, and people. Today, from noon to 2 pm. Learn more and RSVP here.

  • Galbraith Mountain: Join Whatcom Land Trust and the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition, on Saturday, doing trail work and invasive species removal at one of our community’s most beloved recreation spots – Galbraith Mountain on the Land Trust-sponsored Up 2 Something trail. Details and registration.

  • WHS’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center: Join Whatcom Million Trees, this Sunday, as they continue work converting a 12-acre former hayfield into a complex forest of native trees and undergrowth! Register to participate.

  • Whatcom Falls Park: Join the City of Bellingham and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), this Saturday, planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive weeds along Whatcom Creek to improve water quality, recover downstream salmon habitat, and restore forests for wildlife. Register.

Crash an Open House

2639 Yew Street (Open Sun 12-2 pm)
This mid-sized craftsman is located on the quiet section of Yew St (just north of Alabama). So much opportunity to play with surfaces in this one. From the photos, it looks like there are original fir floors mixed with various modern flooring and carpet. Plus, a 1 bed, 1 bath apartment on the second floor. Potential!! 😁 Listing

1430 Mt Baker Highway (Open Sun 11-1 pm)
I’m a little obsessed with residential properties with the potential to house businesses. This seems like one of those. House that needs a little TLC, and a massive four bay shop! It sits on almost two acres alongside the Mt Baker Highway. Endless possibilities. Listing
