New Sheriff’s Office Location Proposed

If you followed last year’s county budget discussions, you may remember hearing community members raise serious concerns about the condition of the current Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, which operates from the basement beneath the County Jail. The stories told by officers and staff were pretty horrific. Raw sewage leaking from ceilings, mold spreading along walls. All around, not a fit environment for anyone to work.

Luckily, the Sheriff’s Office may soon have a new home in the Cordata neighborhood. 👆️ A proposal now before the County Council would relocate the department to the former Ryzex headquarters at 4600 Ryzex Way. The 30,000-square-foot facility offers improved functionality, modern infrastructure, and no ceiling poocicles!

“The Sheriff’s Office has long endured a substandard workspace, and earlier this year the County Council asked my office to prioritize action on this,” said Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu. “After a thorough exploration of options available for lease as well as potential construction of a new facility, we are pleased to have identified a solution that both meets the unique needs of the Sheriff’s Office and allows for relocation as early as next summer.”

🏂️ Ski Bum alert: Snowpack is building at the Mt Baker Ski Area with photos shared this week by the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office and on the Mt Baker Ski Report:

The Snow Report notes that there is “not enough snow base to open” and describe how they need “between 24 – 36 inches of snow base at Heather Meadows in order to consider opening.”

🥾 A short section of the Douglas Fir Trail in Sehome Hill Arboretum will be temporarily closed through November 3 due to overhead communication tower work. The closure will be in effect daily from 8 am to 6 pm while crews complete maintenance in the area.

Hikers can still access other parts of the arboretum by using Arboretum Drive as a detour. The upper parking lot will remain open throughout the duration of the work.
