🐹 A Fawn Alone 🦌🦌

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Monday update from The Hamster Wheel.

We finally had a chance to walk out the newly opened Little Squalicum Pier. The views are every bit as good as expected, and the bird watching is a bonus. Bring binoculars!

Have fun, and stay safe out there!

What To Do If You Find A Fawn Alone

The Whatcom Humane Society posted this weekend that their wildlife rehabilitation center has received the first orphaned fawns of this spring season. While the orphaned fawns are a sad topic, I thought the post is interesting. And the fawns are painfully cute. 👇️

This time of year, “does leave their fawns for hours at a time while they forage, so it's not unusual to find them curled up and alone - often in unusual places. Fawns have the ability to close their scent glands, and their instinct is to stay silent, still, and limp, even with perceived threats right on top of them. This allows them to remain hidden from predators, sometimes even when they are just inches away!”

They suggest that if you “find a fawn curled up and alone, leave it there even if it has been there the whole day. It is likely healthy and waiting for mom to return.” Rather than intervening, call the WHS wildlife rehab center at 360-966-8845 to have a trained staff member evaluate the situation.

Award Winning Documentary Ozogoche at Western

The Western Washington University Honors College has invited the public to a screening of the award-winning documentary Ozogoche this Friday. Ozogoche follows a family in the Ecuadorian Andes whose livelihood is threatened by the decline of a migratory bird called the Cuvivíe.

The documentary will screen at Fraser Hall in room 101 at 4 pm. Be sure to register to attend.

In other news…

The south end of Chuckanut Drive will not be opening to traffic this spring. WSDOT has posted that crews will continue to work “6 days a week likely thru June to remove loose rock, clear debris & assess & repair the road & guardrail.”

There’s not much south of the rockfall on Chuckanut other than Chuckanut Manor, and the road is open as far as the Oyster Dome trailhead from the north.

🚜 Whatcom County Council meets tomorrow, May 13 at 10:30 am, with the Regular Meeting at 6 pm. The agenda is available online. This public meeting is held in the Council Chambers at the County Courthouse or can be watched via Zoom.

🏡 The Whatcom County Charter Review Commission meets today (May 12) in the Civic Annex Building Garden Room at 6 pm. This is a special meeting on Ranked Choice Voting. I’m VERY excited to watch this one and hear the various perspectives of the commissioners. Watch in person or via Zoom.
